Aidan Chambers is a British author born in 1934 near Chester-le-Street.
Despite early academic struggles, he became a teacher and later joined an Anglican monastery.
Chambers left monastic life in 1967 to pursue writing full-time.
He is best known for his "Dance sequence" of six novels, including "This Is All." Chambers and his wife Nancy founded Thimble Press and Signal magazine to promote children's and young adult literature.
They received the Eleanor Farjeon Award in 1982 for their contributions to children's books.
Chambers served as President of the School Library Association from 2003 to 2006.
