He discovered his passion for economic history while studying at Pavia University.
Cipolla's academic career spanned both Italy and the United States, including professorships at the University of California, Berkeley, and various Italian institutions.
He began teaching economic history at the young age of 27 in Catania.
Cipolla's international experience included studying at the Sorbonne and the London School of Economics, as well as a Fulbright fellowship in the United States.
His work in economic history earned him recognition and full professorship at Berkeley in 1959.
