Daniel Keyes was an American author best known for his award-winning work "Flowers for Algernon." Born in Brooklyn, he served in the U.S. Maritime Service before earning degrees in psychology and literature.
Keyes worked as an editor for pulp magazines and comics before focusing on writing.
His breakthrough came with "Flowers for Algernon," which won both Hugo and Nebula awards.
Keyes later became a professor of creative writing at Ohio University.
His other notable works include "The Minds of Billy Milligan" and "The Fifth Sally." Keyes was honored as Author Emeritus by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2000.
