  • Henry Gray was an English anatomist and surgeon born in 1827.

  • He studied at St. George's Hospital in London and became known for his meticulous work.

  • Gray achieved early success, winning prizes for his research on nerves and the spleen.

  • He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society at 25.

  • In 1858, he published the first edition of Gray's Anatomy, which became a highly influential medical textbook.

  • The book's success was partly due to its excellent illustrations by Henry Vandyke Carter.

  • Gray held various positions at St. George's Hospital but tragically died of smallpox in 1861 at age 34.
