James W. Loewen is an American sociologist, historian, and author known for his critical examination of how history is taught in the United States.
He received his bachelor's degree from Carleton College in 1964 and his master's and doctorate degrees from Harvard University in 1967 and 1968, respectively.
Loewen's academic career included teaching positions at Tougaloo College from 1968 to 1975 and the University of Vermont from 1975 until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1995.
His work focuses on challenging traditional historical narratives and promoting a more inclusive and accurate understanding of American history.
