  • Kate Larimore Turabian (1893-1987) was the University of Chicago's graduate school dissertation secretary from 1930 to 1958.

  • Despite lacking formal higher education due to illness, she developed a pamphlet on dissertation formatting that evolved into the widely-used "A Manual for Writers." Turabian was known for her exactitude and erudition, earning respect from scholars despite her lack of academic credentials.

  • She also authored "The Student's Guide for Writing College Papers." After retiring, she moved to California with her husband Stephen.
