Born in Johannesburg, he developed an early fascination with nature, studying various scientific fields.
Watson earned degrees in botany, zoology, geology, chemistry, marine biology, ecology, and anthropology, completing a doctorate in ethology at the University of London.
He worked as a zoo director, expedition leader, and BBC documentary producer.
Watson wrote over 20 books, attempting to explain natural and supernatural phenomena in biological terms.
He is credited with coining the term "hundredth monkey" in his 1979 book Lifetide, which sparked both interest and controversy in scientific circles.
