She began her career as a reporter for a Japanese newspaper in Sydney before returning to Japan to work as a magazine editor in Tokyo.
Her novel, What You Are Looking for is in the Library, became a bestseller in Japan and was shortlisted for the Japan Booksellers' Award.
The book's success has led to translations in over fifteen languages.
Aoyama currently resides in Yokohama, Japan.
