Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu , born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary.
She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, a congregation that grew to over 4,500 nuns active in 133 countries by 2012.
The organization manages homes for those with HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis, as well as soup kitchens, clinics, counseling programs, orphanages, and schools.
Members take vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and service to the poorest.
Mother Teresa's work earned her beatification by Pope John Paul II and canonization by Pope Francis, making her Saint Teresa of Calcutta in the Catholic Church.
