Paul Rusesabagina
Born in 1954
Paul Rusesabagina is a Rwandan humanitarian and former hotel manager best known for sheltering and saving 1,268 Hutu and Tutsi refugees during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
Born to a Hutu father and Tutsi mother, Rusesabagina worked his way up in the hotel industry, eventually becoming manager of the Hotel des Mille Collines in Kigali.
His actions during the genocide, using his connections and negotiation skills to protect refugees, inspired the film "Hotel Rwanda." Rusesabagina later became an outspoken critic of the Rwandan government, leading to controversy and his arrest in 2020.
He was released in 2023 after international pressure.
