Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher born in 1921.
He began as a lawyer before transitioning to teaching Portuguese and adult education.
Freire gained international recognition for his literacy work in Brazil but was exiled following a military coup in 1964.
During his 15-year exile, he taught at Harvard and worked with the World Council of Churches.
Freire's most famous work, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, was published in 1970.
His educational philosophy emphasizes learning as an act of freedom and culture, introducing concepts like "banking" education, conscientization, and the culture of silence.
Freire returned to Brazil in 1979 and died in 1997.
