Robert Leckie was a Marine combat veteran who became a prolific author of American military history.
Born in 1920, he enlisted in the Marines in 1942 and fought in several Pacific campaigns during WWII. After the war, Leckie worked as a journalist before publishing his memoir "Helmet for My Pillow" in 1957.
Inspired by a desire to accurately portray the war experience, he went on to write over 40 books on American military history.
Leckie's works are known for their vivid descriptions and personal insights, drawing from his own experiences as a Marine.
He passed away in 2001 after battling Alzheimer's disease.
