Sir Steven Runciman was a British historian renowned for his work on the Byzantine Empire and the Crusades.
Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he studied under J.B. Bury and became a fellow at Trinity College.
Runciman's wealth allowed him to travel extensively and pursue his scholarly interests.
He served as Professor of Byzantine Art and History at Istanbul University during World War II, where he began researching his seminal work, A History of the Crusades.
Published in three volumes between 1951 and 1954, this became his most famous contribution to historical scholarship.
Runciman's expertise extended beyond Byzantium, as evidenced by his book on Sarawak, The White Rajahs.
