Born in Georgia, she began writing fiction in her forties after studying creative writing.
Her debut novel, The Secret Life of Bees, became a literary phenomenon, spending over 2.5 years on the New York Times bestseller list and selling millions of copies worldwide.
It was adapted into a movie and musical.
Kidd's subsequent novels, The Mermaid Chair and The Invention of Wings, also achieved commercial success and critical acclaim.
She has written memoirs and her latest novel, The Book of Longings, was published in 2020.
Kidd resides in North Carolina with her husband.
