Tsultrim Allione , born Joan Rousmaniere Ewing in 1947, comes from an educated New England family.
Her grandmother introduced her to Buddhism at 15, sparking a lifelong interest.
At 19, she traveled to Nepal and India, and at 22, she was ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun by the 16th Karmapa.
Allione became the first American ordained by the Karmapa, who became her root Lama.
Her background combines Western education with Eastern spiritual practices, influencing her approach to teaching Buddhist concepts to Western audiences.
Allione's work focuses on making ancient wisdom accessible to modern practitioners.
