Waris Dirie

Waris Dirie is a Somali-born model, author, actress, and human rights activist.

Born in 1965, she grew up in a nomadic family in Somalia before fleeing to escape an arranged marriage.

She eventually became a successful international model, appearing in major fashion magazines.

In 1997, Dirie left modeling to focus on activism against female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice she personally endured as a child.

She was appointed UN Special Ambassador for the Elimination of FGM that same year.

Dirie has written several books, including her autobiography Desert Flower, which details her experiences and campaigning efforts.

Her work has significantly raised awareness about FGM and women's rights issues in Africa and globally.
