  • His debut novel, Sharky's Machine, became a film directed by Burt Reynolds.

  • Diehl relocated to St. Simons Island, Georgia, where he wrote eight more novels, including Primal Fear, which was also adapted into a successful film starring Richard Gere and Edward Norton.

  • He later returned to the Atlanta area and resided in Woodstock, Georgia.

  • Diehl passed away in 2006 at Emory University Hospital due to an aortic aneurysm while working on his tenth novel.
